We're coming to an end.

This is a plot diagram of the Giver.

Health Quiz. AH!!

This week in health we talked about Wellness. Infuences for it, and how to take charge of it.
Wellness is the achievement of a person's best in all 6 components.

Some influences on your wellness are:

Hereditary influences - are the traits you inherit from your parents.
Example - Diabetes
Social Influences - is influences by the relationship you have with other people.
Example - Going to a party where alcohol is served, you're being influenced negatively
Cultural Influences - are the values, beliefs, and shared by other people that have a common background.
Example - The food you eat
And
Environmental Influences - are your surroundings , the area you live, and the things in your environment.
Example - Pollutants, safety regulations, and medical aspects.

How you can take care of your wellness is:
Knowledge - also known as Health literacy - health information you need to make good choices about your health.
Lifestyle - is putting your knowledge into action.
and
Attitude - A person's way of thinking, or attitude.

We also learned about the four ways society addresses health problems.
Medical advances - as in conducting medical research.
Technology - solving health problems through society.
Public policy - is where the government makes policies and regulations to address health problems.
and
Education - is the key factor in preventing disease.

What is an advocate?
It's someone who speaks in favor for a particular event, or subject.

I also made a PSA (Public Service Announcement). I chose childhood obesity.

Low Calorie Cake! Life. Complete.

Once a week for health, we have cooking and nutrition. This week we made a mug cake.
It's cake.. in a mug.

All you need is Angel Food cake mix (can be store bought), another cake of your choice (you can make just the angel food), a microwavable mug, and water.

First you'll need to combine the Angel Food cake mix with your other cake mix. Place in a gallon size freezer bag. Mix well.

Take your mug, and put 1/4 of a cup of the mix into the mug.
Add 2 tablespoons of water to the mix. (If you'd like a chewier cake, just put 1 tablespoon of water in.)

Microwave for 1 minute and remove carefully, mug will be hot.

I really enjoyed this recipe because it's low calorie. By using the Angel Food you cut out the calories of the oil and the eggs. And it tastes so good!

Confusion is a word we have invented for an order which is not understood.

Now I need the events from the story in chronological order.

  • Jonas tries to describe the emotions he has about the Ceremony of Twelve
  • After dinner, Jonas has a conversation about the ceremony with his parents.
  • Jonas's father  brings home a baby, Gabriel.
  • Jonas remembers the time he saw the apple change (he was beginning to see color).
  • At the Ceremony of Twelve, they skip Jonas, and at the end, the selected him to be the receiver.
  • Jonas reads the rules as receiver and is shocked to know he can lie, something that was forbidden.
  • Jonas's first day with the Giver, he receives the memory of a sled and snow and the pain of sunburn.
  • Jonas sees Fiona's hair change and the Giver tells him he's seeing color. He learns how they sacrificed freedom for the security of "sameness".
  • Jonas starts bonding with Gabriel secretly giving him calming memories to get him to sleep.
  • The Giver tells Jonas his favorite memory, a Christmas morning with real family.
  • Jonas gets the Giver to tell him about Rosemary, the previous failed receiver, his daughter.
  • Jonas watches his dad "release" a newborn twin, only releasing is killing with a lethal injection.
  • Jonas steals Gabriel, who is about to be released, and they flee from the community together.
  • Jonas and Gabriel are about to die from the cold and starvation. They get to the top of a hill and find a sled, therefore, riding down.
  • Jonas sees bright lights and hears music in front of him. Behind him he hears some too, only that be blames on an echo.

"You're never too young."

Okay, lol so that quote has nothing to do with anything in this post. It's just the first thing that popped into my head.
I'm about halfway through my English blog assignment.
I now need to describe the setting and introduce the characters.

The setting is in an Utopian community in the future within several other Utopian communities. In this community everyone is equal, no feeling of weather or feeling anything for that matter. Also, no color. "Sameness" is the word that I feel best describes this.
And now for the characters.
The main characters are Jonas and the Giver. The other characters are Lily, Asher, Fiona, Gabriel, Mother, and Father.
Jonas - is a 12 year old boy who lives in this community. As his job, he was selected, not assigned, the job of the Receiver. His job is to take the memories from the Giver so the community does not live with the burden of those thoughts.
The Giver - is an old man, who was chosen to hold all the memories of the community's past, just as Jonas was. He is Jonas's teacher, and shares with him, happy, sad, and burdensome memories, as it is his job.
Lily - is Jonas's 8 year old sister, and loves little Gabriel.
Asher - is Jonas's best guy friend. He was assigned the job as recreation director.
Fiona - is Jonas's best girl friend. Jonas is also interested in her. She was assigned the job of  taking care of the Old Ones.
Gabriel - is a little one, a newborn. He spent the year with Jonas's family and was almost released until Jonas took him along on his journey.
Mother - is Jonas's "mother" or the mom like figure who cared for him all his life.
Father - is Jonas's "father" or the father like figure who cared for him all his life. He is a nurturer and also a releaser.
As for antagonist and protagonist I was a little conflicted in who or what to choose. For protagonist I chose Jonas, obviously for he was the main character. For antagonist I had two choices.
My first choice was the feelings or there lack of. Or maybe the community seeing as though it's setting Jonas back. It's stopping him from experiencing life, the one we live nowadays. My second choice was Jonas's father, but I only decided this towards the end. You could see that after Jonas had watched the tape of his father "releasing", or killing the newborn twin, that he hated this father. That's kind of why I chose to see him as an enemy.

Books, books, books.

The Giver's book genre is young adult, science fiction.
I chose 3 other books that I would like to read that are also in this genre.

Uglies - Scott Westerfeld
It's about teenagers that turn equally beautiful at the age of 16. It sounds kinda like the Giver, everyone being equal that is. And then the uglies deciding to keep their natural beauty just as Jonas decided to stand up for his feelings.

The Forest of Hands and Teeth - Carrie Ryan
It's about a village ruled by the Sisterhood, rumored the only human community left, for as the rest of the earth is filled with Zombies.

Libyrinth - Pearl North
It's about a girl who speaks with books. She's a librarian in a future community. By understanding these books, she tries to stop a war between two different communities.

Oh and on the other note. I need to identify the point of view in the Giver.
The point of view is from Jonas's eyes. We only know what he knows.

''But why can't everybody have the Memories? I think it would seem a little bit easier if the memories were shared. You and i wouldn't have to bear so much by ourselves, if everybody took a part." The Giver sighed, "Your right," he said. "But then everybody would be budened and pained. They don't want that. And that's the real reason the Receiver is so vital to them and honored. They selected me -- and you -- to lift the burden from themselves."

Lois Lowry!

Lois Lowry was born on March 20, 1937 in Hawaii.
She married at the age of 19 to a naval officer.
She went to college at Brown University in Rhode Island, but after her husband left the service, she returned to college at the University of Maine.
Her marriage ended in 1977 (she was 40) and she graduated and settled in Maine with her 4 kids.

This is one of the many, many books she wrote.
I also enjoyed this picture because it showed the colorlessness of the book, yet it let in a little light and color for the memories he received.

"Every human being is the author of his own health or disease.”

Health Today.
In health this past week we've studied about health risk factors, risk behaviors, and the 6 components of health.
Did you know that the the highest leading cause for death of teenagers is motor vehicle accidents?

Then comes homicide, suicide, and other accidents.
Be safe, if that's not already pretty obvious. lol

Can you name the 6 health risk factors?
There are:
 - Sedentary lifestyles - also known as "Couch Potato!"
 - Alcohol and other drug use - using these can cause liver disease, certain types of cancer, heart disease, and brain damage. They are also the factors for sexually transmitted diseases.

- Sexual activity - participating in this outside a committed relationship (MARRIAGE) puts you at risk for health problems, such as HIV, STDs, and unplanned pregnancies.
 - Behaviors that cause injuries - also known as carrying a weapon, drinking and driving, or doing drugs. Need I say more?
 - Tobacco use - using this can give you lung cancer, turn your teeth yellow, make you addicted, and give you respiratory disease.
and
 - Poor eating habits - doing so will cause weight gain, and put you at risk for heart disease, cancer, and strokes. Eat in moderation also.

And finally, do you know the 6 components of health? Hmmmm. I guess not.
Physical heath  - refers to the way your body functions.
Emotional health - is expressing your emotions in a nondestructive way.
Social health - is the quality of your relationships with friends, family, teachers, and others you are in contact with.

Mental health - is the ability to recognize reality and cope with the demands of daily life.
Spiritual health - is maintaing harmounious relationships with other living things having spiritual direction and purpose.
and
Environmental health - is keeping your air and water clean, your food safe, and the land around you enjoyable and safe.

The Giver

I'm reading a book called: The Giver.
It's by Lois Lowry.
It was copyrighted in 1993.
The picture is of a dove, because when I saw it, I thought of freedom.
And I associated the dove with The Giver because of Jonas fleeing, secretly wanting freedom.

Awkward?

What things are really awkward?
Sniffling in a quiet room.
Little kids asking to do your homework.
Cough drops. Menthol mixed with fruit. Yum.
Your doctor, especially when they check you.
Pickles. Really? How awkward is being soaked in vinegar.
Singing off key, or not being able to sing for that matter.
And many, many, many other things.

Exams were this week. Fun. Haha, sarcasm.
Anything exciting happen?
I'm going to watch Fantasia soon. I was always afraid of the brooms as a child.
You know what?
This - the blog that is - is very awkward.
I mean how many people would actually read this?
I'm the type of person who would read this, seeing as I did write it.
Still, I guess I'm doing this for myself. And for health class.
But that's good right? Doing things for yourself? I do want to be a writer actually.

Well, in other words, I'm very awkward. Socially, mentally, with everything.
But I guess that's me. I shouldn't have to change myself to meet others.

Moral of the week? lol, Don't change for others.
2nd moral of the week? Don't make morals of the week, not even to state no morals.
3rd moral of the week? (I gotta stop) Don't follow my directions. I fail.

I'm here because of school.
My school? Florida College Academy.
I get to post stuff about lots of good healthy food for my heath class.
Oh. I'm a freshman.
UncoolNerd? Long story.. Someone I know said he liked cool nerds. I'm therefore, UNcoolnerd.
That's really not that long, I guess.
Today is the 6th, as it says as the date. I love writing the number 6.
But I'm typing, not writing. Totally defeats the purpose of saying that.
I'm running out of things to say.
Oh. Most importantly, I'm a Christian. God is the most important thing in my life.

I have 1 John 4: 7-8 written on my converse. I wear them often.
3 words to describe me? Nerdy, quirky, and fun I guess.
I'm also no ball of sunshine.
Some people call me goth. I don't see why, I'm not. I just like black.
I'm usually very quiet, even around the people I adore.
But truthfully, I'm not a people person.
I'd do anything for the people I love, though.
I love snails. But I stand like a flamingo.
I'm constantly listening to music.
Who I like? Enya, He Is We, Audrey Assad, A Rocket to the Moon, Mindy White, and anything technish..
I love books, I'll probably include them in these posts.
Will there be other posts? Other than for health.. who knows.

I go there I'll lose my way
If we stay here we're not together
